PALMETTO -- A 20-year-old man shot multiple times outside a Palmetto home more than two weeks ago died Thursday, according to the Palmetto Police Department.

Matthew Arguez of Bradenton was shot just after midnight July 8 while standing in front of a home in the 300 block of 14th Street West.

Arguez had been atBlake Medical Center in critical condition since the shooting.

"People heard shots and then they found him lying on the ground," Palmetto Police Deputy Chief Scott Tyler said.

Detectives say they think Arguez was shot by one of at least two occupants of a white vehicle, possibly a Ford Aerostar or a similar small van.

Palmetto police and the Manatee County Homicide Task Force are investigating the shooting.

Law enforcement officials are being close-mouthed about the progress of the investigation.

"We are not releasing more information about the investigation at this time," Tyler said.

Arguez had a criminal history. In July 2012 he was charged with battery, in October 2012 he was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of marijuana, and in February he was charged with possession of marijuana.

This is the first homicide in Palmetto this year and the seventh homicide overall in Manatee County.
