Bradenton Marauders defeat Brevard County Manatees 4-2

July 25, 2013

The Bradenton Marauders (11-22) topped the Brevard County Manatees (15-16) 4-2 at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night. Adrian Sampson (W, 4-6) matched his season high with seven strikeouts for the Marauders. Sampson surrendered consecutive singles to D’Vontrey Richardson and Yadiel Rivera in the first inning, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. A sacrifice fly by Nick Ramirez gave the Manatees a 1-0 lead. Rivera stole his way to third. He attempted to score on a fly out to right, but Willy Garcia threw a bullet home for a momentum-swinging double play. Garcia tripled to center with one down in the Marauders’ second. Richardson made the first of his two diving catches to retire Jose Osuna, but Garcia scored on the play to knot the score. Bradenton used a pair of infield singles and aggressive base running by Benji Gonzalez to plate a run in the third to take the lead for good. Gonzalez added a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Junior Sosa drove home a run with a double to chase Chad Pierce (L, 5-4) after 4 1/3. Sampson cruised through seven innings. He was faced with a two-on, one-out jam in the third, but struck out Ramirez and Mitch Haniger to end the threat. Greg Hopkins hit a solo homer in the seventh for the other Brevard County run. Sampson did not walk a batter. In 105 1/3 innings this season, Sampson has struck out 66 and walked just 16. Robbie Kilcrease struck out two batters in the eighth inning. Tyler Waldron got the save with a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts. Game two of the series is Friday night at 6:35 p.m. Joely Rodriguez will pitch for the Marauders against Brent Suter of the Manatees. The game will be broadcast online at www.Bradenton Marauders.com.
