Sheriff: Lakewood Ranch Medical Center site of domestic battery

MANATEE -- The parking lot of the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center was the site of an incident of domestic violence at 11:39 p.m. Saturday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Ernest Scurry, 53, struck his wife at least three times in the face with his hands, which was witnessed by security at the hospital.

At the time she was hit, Scurry's wife was laying across the hood of the family car trying to prevent Scurry from opening the hood to disable the car, according to a sheriff's office report.

When authorities later asked the victim what had happened, she said Scurry did not want to go with her to the hospital to pick up her mother who was being discharged from the hospital, according to the report.

Scurry did end up going to the hospital with his wife but argued all the way there, the report states.

When the victim returned to the car with her mother, Scurry allegedly tried to pull a hose off the car to disable it so they wouldn't be able to leave, according to the report.

When confronted by the security guard and an unknown civilian, Scurry fled and was later found at a gasoline station about a mile from the hospital, where he was arrested and charged with battery, the report states.

Scurry was released from the Manatee County jail Sunday after posting a $1,000 bond, according to the sheriff's office website.
