Bradenton woman in serious condition after falling asleep while driving

July 20, 2013

MANATEE -- A 22-year-old Bradenton woman is in serious condition after she fell asleep while driving and crased into a power pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 4:45 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of State Road 70 W., according to an FHP report.

Ashley Stuart was driving her 2008 Honda Civic westbound on State Road 70 in the left lane when she fell asleep and began to drive diagonally across the eastbound lanes. She then drove off the road, hitting the curb and then a mailbox with the front of the vehicle.

The vehicle continued southbound on the sidewalk before hitting the power pole. The vehicle then rotated counter clockwise, traveled into the eastbound lanes completely blocking them all and coming into its final resting place facing north.

Stuart, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Blake Trauma Center in serious condition, according to the report.

The report shows that the crash was not alcohol related.

Skid marks were not found at the scene. Stuart was charged with careless driving.
