The band's beginnings didn't portend such a significant future.
Twenty years ago, the members of 311 released their first full-length album, a homemade and independently released CD with the generic title "Music."
Almost nobody knew about it.
They set out from their Omaha home and went out on tour. Then their van caught fire and burned by the side of the road, destroying all their equipment.
But now 311 is one of the most venerable and consistently popular acts in whatever you choose to call their style of music -- alternative rock or rap-rock or even reggae-rock.
The band has released 11 hit albums. Even that first album has gone gold and become something of a classic.
They'll be at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre Tampa July 23 headlining one of the best concert lineups of the summer. Their "Unity Tour" also includes Cypress Hill, Pennywise, G Love & Special Sauce and Sublime With Rome.
Sublime With Rome is a collaboration between Sublime bassist Eric Wilson and singer Rome Ramirez that mostly does old songs by Sublime.
Cypress Hill, of course, is one of the pioneering bands of hip-hop, best know for "Insane in the Brain." It still has its classic lineup, including B-Real and Sen Dog, basically intact.
G. Love & Special Sauce are a long-established Philadelphia R&B band known mostly for fun and amiable live shows.
