Florida Democrats off base in Gov. Scott bashing

Orlando Sentinel EditorialJuly 13, 2013

Gov. Rick Scott has been taking his time naming a new deputy, and Florida Democrats are outraged.

"It is clear now that Rick Scott is running the governor's office just like he ran his business: with total disregard for the best interests of the people he serves," carped party spokesman Joshua Karp in an email Tuesday to reporters. "Almost 120 days after the resignation of scandal-plagued Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, Rick Scott says he is only now beginning the search for a replacement for Florida's second-ranking constitutional officer."

Oh, please.

Yes, the lieutenant governor's job has been open since Carroll resigned in March, after an Internet cafe company she had worked for in the past was targeted in a criminal investigation. But state government hasn't missed a beat in the meantime.

That's because Florida's lieutenant governor normally has about as much to do as the Maytag repairman. He or she appears on the ballot during campaigns, then mostly disappears -- occasionally emerging for ribbon-cuttings or meetings of obscure state agencies.

Most "of the people he (Scott) serves" wouldn't be able to pick the lieutenant governor out of a lineup -- unless he or she happens to be accompanied by their state-funded security detail.

The governor actually has done his constituents a good turn by saving them the cost of paying a lieutenant for a few months.

With lines of political attack like this, it's no wonder Florida Democrats have such a hard time winning statewide elections.
