On June 13, the Gamma Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., in conjunction with the chapter's nonprofit foundation, Five Pearls of Excellence Inc., held its annual Blue and White Scholarship Reception at St. John's First Institutional Baptist Church in Palmetto. Each year, approximately $10,000 is given in scholarships. This year, the sorority awarded 18 scholarships to deserving students in Manatee and Sarasota counties. The guest speaker for the event was Gamma Rho Zeta member attorney Shelli Eddie, CEO/Founder of the Freeland Eddie Law Group and Adjunct Professor at Argosy University Sarasota. The 2013 Zeta Phi Beta Scholarship Recipients are Natasha Amrisma - Manatee High School, Matthew Booner - Manatee High School, Katy Pierre Charles - Manatee High School, James Davis - Bayshore High School, Kasane Davis - Bayshore High School, Robert Hicks - Manatee High School, Carrie Holloway - Southeast High School, Danielle Johnson - Bayshore High School, Tequila Kirkland - Bayshore High School, Maureen Madae - Manatee High School, Immani Mays - Palmetto High School, Devan McDuffie - Manatee School of the Arts, Briana Nelson - Lakewood Ranch High School, Maiyah Newsome - Riverview High School, Gedeon Richemond - Southeast High School, Savannah Smith - Manatee High School, Reine Thormodson - Manatee High School and Erin Tribble - Manatee High School.
Mother Cabrini Council of the Knights of Columbus sponsored its sixth annual Charity Golf Tournament on June 22 at the Preserve at Tara golf course in Bradenton. The top foursome was made up of, from left, Richard Gilkey, Wayne Waletich standing in for Ron Javate, Erin Honold and Paul Honold. Proceeds of more than $3,000 from the tournament are being used to help support Special Olympics of Manatee County, SOLVE Maternity Homes and Dreams Are Free School for intellectually handicapped youth.
The 2013 Florida Cattlemen's Association annual convention was held at the Marco Island Marriott Resort. The Manatee County Quiz bowl team consisting of Jennifer Greene, Zach Quattlebaum, Casey Wingate, Chisom Thum and Courtney Wingate won first place in the state. The team of Jessie Embach, Jennifer Greene and Courtney Wingate won second place in the Team Marketing competition. This year was the first year where a public speaking contest was held, and Casey Wingate won first place in the juniors division. Lindsey John was voted the Outstanding Cattlewoman of the Year, an extremely high honor, and Theresa John won a handmade roping saddle sponsored by the Nutrena Feed Company.
