Sarasota workers rescue 78-year-old man in submerged vehicle

July 9, 2013

A 78-year-old Sarasota County man was in critical condition after he apparently drove his 1999 Acura TL into a lake at 3:12 p.m. Tuesday.

The Osprey man was traveling north on Rivendell Road west of Oak Meadows Lane when he began to run off the road for unknown reasons, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

The driver continued north on the north grass shoulder into the lake submerging his vehicle completely underwater.

The victim was recovered from the vehicle by Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies and Sarasota County Fire Department personnel. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

It is believed that the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle, but the dive team is checking the pond for additional subjects. Witnesses did not see the vehicle enter the pond but called 911 when they noticed it floating in the water.
