New Plaza in East Manatee will house Publix, Beef 'O' Brady's

EAST MANATEE -- Residents in the neighborhood near Lockwood Ridge Road and State Road 70 will soon have their very own Publix, Beef 'O' Brady's and Hair Cuttery in a new Lockwood Commons shopping plaza.

The new plaza, at 4505 53rd Ave. E., is slated to be completed by October, said Mark Chait of Benderson Development.

Chait said the area was a great fit for a plaza because of its heavy traffic flow and significant part of that population not being served.

"It's a great location for a neighborhood shopping center," said Chait.

Construction began several months ago, and the structure is taking form with the outer walls and roof near completion.

Publix will take up most of the 65,00-square-foot plaza, being 45,000 square feet in size.

The new shopping center was met with opposition from at least one Manatee County resident, Darlene O'Keefe. She sent a letter to the County Commission in April stating her worries with increased traffic to the area, the water runoff pond not having fencing, although the county does not require it, and she suggested the city require the developers put up a 10-foot fence to buffer

the location for safety.

Records show the commission voted unanimously to approve the shopping center's certificates.

Publix will be accompanied in the plaza by Beef 'O' Brady's, Subway, Purity Cleaners, Sakura Thai Sushi, KT Nails, Lee's Kitchen and Hair Cuttery.

Beef 'O' Brady's owner, Tim Macri, said the company chose to open this fourth location in Manatee County because his father loved that particular street corner.

Macri said the company had been eyeing that area because it thought it was a good location with the new homes being built nearby.

"We've been eyeing that corner for quite a while," said Macri. "Finally there is a development there for us to go into."

The family-friendly restaurant hopes the community comes out to dine in the new location.

"It would be a great fit to in the community," said Macri.
