Manatee County's youth tax should be spent only on children's improvement programs

July 3, 2013

On June 29, the Opinion page of the Bradenton Herald said it best: they "encourage additional heavy lifting on the restoration of children's services to the tax's original intent."

I want to go further and say they need to stop robbing the children's fund now. This would be a good time for the Manatee County commission to fix the problem.

They will say we need it for other things but in reality it's their responsibility to make sure they don't. This has been going on for too long.

Now the administrative law judge's decision last year determined the Department of Juvenile Justice improperly shifted some juvenile detention costs to the counties. The county has purpose to start reducing the fund next year by $740,000.

This is the same people who wanted us to trust them to implement a new health care tax! We elect you to be good stewards of the taxes in Manatee County. These funds are for the children of Manatee County. Not a go-to account for anything that is needed.

County Commissioner Michael Gallen has been the one who continues to speak out for the children in Manatee County. Hopefully the others will follow him.
