Sarasota man charged with abusing farm animals

July 2, 2013

— The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man for failing to care for his animals after finding two dead and two sick calves on his property.

Deputies charged David Damschroder, 63, of the 16000 block of Winburn Place after receiving a report of a suspicious person at 10:30 a.m. Monday. During the investigation, Damschroder took deputies to his home but his demeanor changed and he attacked them.

When taken into custody, Damschroder said he had dairy calves in the back pasture. Deputies found two dead calves and two weak and sickly, now being treated at West Coast Veterinary Center/Braden River Equine.

Damschroder is charged with four counts confinement of animals without sufficient food and water, one count battery on a law enforcement officer and one count assault on a LEO.
