Operation Dry Water produces one Sarasota BUI in 23 stops

During "Operation Dry Water" this weekend, Sarasota County Marine Patrol deputies conducted 23 vessel inspections, issued three boating citations, seven written boating safety warnings, and made one boating under the influence arrest. Two teens were arrested Saturday for underage alcohol possession.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office participated in the nationa BUI awareness and enforcement campaign Friday through Sunday with increased patrols, life jacket checks and boater education.

Alcohol limits are the same on the water as on the road. Anyone caught boating with .08 blood alcohol content or above can be arrested.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol use was the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents in 2012, and was listed as the sole leading factor in 17 percednt of fatalities from recreational boating accidents.

Marine Patrol deputies will increase patrols again throughout the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
