Troubling news from both Manatee County government, school board

July 1, 2013

Recent reports from the Manatee County administration as well as the school board indicates some troubling news.

We have been informed that the school system is in the hole for about $3 million; they have begun overhauling the mess left by the previous administrator, who should have been fired four years ago.

Now that the voters have dumped the progressives' plan to increase the sales tax to pay for healthcare for people who are uninsured, or refuse to be insured or work, the proposed but unproven property tax reduction is in limbo.

Unfortunately, the voters approved issue No. 2, reducing planned property taxes of new business for jobs, we were informed (it's always for jobs or the kids). New infrastructure costs due to these new businesses will therefore be borne by existing property owners, upping their taxes (there is no free lunch!).

If, as stated, we will have a $9 million hole in the budget by 2015, should we not immediately begin planning for it by reducing costs wherever possible?

Oh, and by the way, let's all forget about that new multimillion dollar communications fiasco for the police; dump it!

Let's stop the incessant surveying. I have lived in Manatee County for over 10 years, and SR 70 has been surveyed at least 20 times in those 10 years. What are they looking for? They know where the road is and if they need help, contact Google Map!
