Samoset Elementary custodian both admirable, memorable

June 30, 2013

I'm writing to extend my appreciation to Mr. Luther McLeod, a custodian at Samoset Elementary for over 25 years. I had to do some investigation to figure out his full name, as I've only ever known him as Mr. Luther.

Mr. Luther has been a fixture of the neighborhood for as long as I remember. It wasn't uncommon to see him toiling away on the school grounds, ensuring the campus was safe, clean and well maintained for the children to enjoy well after everyone else had gone home for the day.

Mr. Luther was also a very funny guy. I have many fond memories as a young student seeing him stop mopping for a moment to pretend his mop was a microphone which he sang into, or whatever else he could think of to get a laugh from us children.

It was almost like an Abbott and Costello routine, as Ms. Kay, the head custodian, would always play along and shoot him a stern look and yell at him to get back to work. It never failed to crack us kids up and brighten our day.

As an adult I ran into him in public several times and had the pleasure of spending a few moments speaking with him. He never had an unkind word for anyone and always seemed genuinely interested in how you were doing and what you had to say.

Upon researching his last name I found out that he's been retired since last year.

Thank you for your service to the community, Mr. Luther. It's much appreciated.
