PALMETTO -- A Palmetto man with a history of abuse against his elderly parents remained in the Manatee County jail Thursday on bonds totaling $60,000 after he was arrested for attacking his 75-year-old father.

Michael McGrain, 29, reportedly battered his father late Wednesday at their home on the 8000 block of Lake Drive in Palmetto.

The arrest report indicated the younger McGrain was "yelling profanity" at his mother and the father told him to stop it.

As McGrain's father turned to walk back into the kitchen, his son came up behind him and punched him in the face, according to the arrest report. He continued striking the older man as he fell, according to the report.

His father was able to escape in his car and McGrain left on foot.

His father returned home where his wounds were treated by paramedics, but he refused to go to the hospital.

McGrain was located by deputies with a K-9 team and air support, which found

him running through back yards.

Initially cooperative, McGrain began pulling away and scratched two deputies on the hands and arms when they tried to handcuff him.

One of the deputies Tasered McGrain and he was then handcuffed.

McGrain was charged with aggravated domestic battery on a person over 65 years old and resisting arrest with violence.

The arrest followed a familiar pattern with McGrain. His previous bouts with the law include:

• In March 2009, McGrain was charged with domestic battery on a victim over 65 years old after punching his father twice. He also resisted arrest and had to be Tasered.

• In January 2009, McGrain was charged with battery and resisting arrest after his father refused to take him to get more "pills" and McGrain pushed his father backward onto his mother. McGrain resisted arrest and was Tasered.

• In July 2008, he was charged with battery after shoving his mother to her knees during a verbal dispute with his parents.

• In February 2008, McGrain was charged with battery and criminal mischief after his mother refused to give him $40. He reportedly began to destroy the house and cut her arm.

McGrain has multiple other prior charges, including solicitation of a prostitute, possession of marijuana and stalking.
