Army Pfc Matthew J. Pitkin graduated from basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., AI Tat, Fort Lee, Va., and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. Pitkin is now stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. He is the son of Sandy and Tom Pitkin of Bradenton. He is the husband of Ashley Pitkin and father of Cooper Pitkin,

He graduated from Southeast High School in 2012.


Zachary (Zack) Sobel of Longboat Key recently graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University earning a bachelor of arts in history. In addition to maintaining academic excellence throughout his four-year matriculation at Princeton, Zack was also active in the Tiger Battalion, Army ROTC; played sprint football and was an Orange Key member, leading campus tours for prospective students and their families. Hours after being awarded his diploma, Zack was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, as an explosive ordnance disposal officer. During the commissioning ceremony, Zack's parents, Edward and Donna Sobel, also of Longboat Key, attached the officer bars to Zack's uniform. Zack will report for basic training at Fort Lee, Va., in September. His training will continue at Eglin Air Force Base, near Fort Walton Beach.

Zack graduated from Saint Stephen's Episcopal School in Bradenton.


Air Force Airman Bonfilio V. Mendoza graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio -- Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Mendoza is the son of Mendoza Bonfilio of Chesterfield, Va., and Christine Men

doza of Ellenton.

He is a 2008 graduate of Manchester High School, Midlothian, Va.


Jacob T. Erickson has been awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship to attend a host college or university.

High school seniors from across the United States are selected after a competitive application process based on comprehensive tests scores, scholastic achievement, school officials' evaluations, extra curricular activities and community involvement.

Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, the cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force.

He is the son of Jon and Kim Erickson of Johns Creek, Ga.

He is the grandson of Terry and Candice Freese of Bradenton.
