Burglary victim shoots at fleeing VW, hits neighbor's car

June 24, 2013

A Manatee resident shot at a suspected burglar Sunday, striking the neighbor's car and perhaps the suspect's getaway Volkswagen, according to the sheriff's report.

The man had returned home at about 4:35 p.m. to find a newer model VW in his driveway, the report stated. The suspect appeared from the home in the 2800 block of 26th Avenue Drive West, and the resident confronted him with his pistol. The suspect got into the VW, striking the front of the resident's vehicle but causing no noticeable damage.

The resident told officers that he warned the suspect that he would shoot, but the suspect drove through the yard and onto the road. As he was fleeing, the resident fired two shots -- one that he believes struck the door of the suspect’s car.

The other went across the street and struck the neighbor's car in the rear window, the report stated.
