BRADENTON -- The Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County and Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee received major donations recently.

The Boys & Girls Club received a $10,000 grant from the Tampa Bay Rays' Baseball Foundation during a ceremony at Tropicana Field.

Meals on Wheels PLUS was given a check for more than $8,600 from Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., which raised the funds through customer donations.

The grant from the Rays Community Fund Grant Program will go toward the Boys & Girls Clubs' Project Learn.

Described as a lifesaver by parents, Project Learn focuses on low-performing students whose progress in academic performance is hindered by factors unrelated to their academic capacity. The program assures the students complete their homework and are prepared to begin school daily with the ability to succeed. The Rays Foundation has invested close to $3 million in youth and education programs and scholarships since 2008.

Winn-Dixie's donation to Meals on Wheels PLUS will augment the agency's mission to provide nutrition to senior citizens and families in need, through its home-delivered meal program and operation of The Food Bank of Manatee.

The grocer's community donation program has generated more than $150,000 raised by customers for 75 nonprofit organizations within the grocer's operating area.
