Failed Palmetto burglary results in several charges

June 20, 2013

— The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24-year-old William Griffin for attempted burglary and other charges about 10 a.m. Thursday.

Detectives reported a next-door neighbor saw Griffin approach the victim’s residence in the 2600 block of 15th Avenue East and try to pry open the side garage door with a hammer.

When this did not work, detectives reported the suspect smashed the side garage window with the hammer and tried to climb inside. He was unable to squeeze his large frame through the window, detectives reported, so he tried to use a chair to climb in.

After the neighbor called 911, Griffin fled on foot upon seeing a marked car arrive on scene.

Griffin reportedly ran south through several yards and over a fence into the ditch near 2305 Canal Road where he was arrested and charged with one count burglary, criminal mischief, giving false name and violation of probation.
