June 20, 2013

The Bradenton Marauders were swept by the JupiterHammerheads to conclude the first half of the season. Jupiter snagged a 3-2 win, the Marauders 16th one-run loss of the season, Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Marauders scored first on a wild play in the top of the second. Elias Diaz looped a soft double off Andrew Heaney (W, 1-1) into right field. Alex Burg missed a sliding catch in right, then threw errantly toward second to send Diaz to third. The errant throw was mishandled by leftfielder Ryan Rieger, allowing Diaz to score on one play. Jupiter tagged Matt Benedict (L, 0-7) with three straight hits to start the fourth, plating two runs and taking the lead for good. The Hammerheads added a run in the sixth against Ryan Beckman. Wilfredo Gimenez singled with two outs and scored on Ross Wilson’s double. Gimenez went 3-for-4 and had seven hits in the series. The Marauders tallied a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Eric Avila to cut Jupiter’s lead to 3-2. Bradenton loaded the bases with one down in the eighth, but Nick Wittgren entered and escaped the jam. Wittgren pitched the ninth as well for his 14th save. The Marauders open the second half at home tomorrow against the Charlotte Stone Crabs. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Robby Rowland takes the ball for Bradenton.
