JUPITER -- The Bradenton Marauders (26-40) were shut out for the ninth time this season, falling 2-0 to the Jupiter Hammerheads (34-32) on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Jupiter stranded 14 runners, but the two runs they scratched across were enough as Jose Urena (W, 7-2) beat the Marauders for the second time this season.
Urena pitched seven scoreless innings, surrendering just four singles to the Bradenton lineup. The righty struck out five and did not walk a batter. The Marauders did not have a runner reach third until Junior Sosa led off the eighth with a triple against Pete Andrelczyk. Andrelczyk stranded Sosa and recorded the final six outs for his first save.
Adrian Sampson (L, 2-3) started and pitched six innings for the Marauders. Wilfredo Gimenez was his chief nemesis. The Jupiter catcher went 3-for-4, singling home Alex Burg in the first and doubling Burg in in the sixth. The first RBI-hit immediately followed a balk by Sampson that put Burg in scoring position. Sampson struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Eric Avila had his seven-game hitting streak snapped for Bradenton. Alen Hanson went 1-for-4 and stole his 16th base of the season in his first game since winning MVP honors at the Florida State League All-Star Game.
The second game of the series is Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Zack Dodson will start on the mound for Bradenton against Henderson Alvarez for Jupiter. The game can be heard online on www.BradentonMarauders.com.
