BRADENTON -- A man faces attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot his wife in the face, according to Bradenton Police Chief Michael Radzilowski.

Steven Pinel is currently being treated at a local hospital for injuries he sustained while fleeing the scene.

Police responded to the 4800 block of 51st Street West at 11:49 p.m. Friday after Pinel's wife fled to a neighbor's home after being shot, according to a report.

Police issued an alert for Pinel's vehicle, which was found by Manatee County sheriff's deputies in a ditch along State Road 70, on the southbound on ramp to Interstate 75.

According to police, Pinel unsuccessfully tried to hijack the vehicle of a passerby, who stopped to offer assistance after the crash.

Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle in the ditch pointed a gun at them before fleeing on foot.

At 3:20 a.m., deputies located Pinel walking through neighborhoods in the Tara subdivision, just west of I-75.

Pinel was taken to a local hospital where he is under guard. Early Saturday his status was upgraded to "trauma alert" because of his injuries police said.

His wife is recovering from non-life threatening injuries in the intensive-care unit at another hospital.

Police confiscated Pinel's vehicle to process evidence. and are still investigating.
