Smoke shop robbed in Sarasota

Sarasota Police released this surveillance photos an armed robbery on Friday.

SARASOTA -- Police are investigating an armed robbery Friday in North Sarasota.

According to the Sarasota Police Department, the robbery occurred just before 4 p.m. at 2815 North Tamiami Trail at the Smoke Shop Sarasota/Cheap Smokes store.

Officers say a man walked into the store with a hammer and told the clerk he wanted money.

The suspect threw the hammer at the clerk, hitting him in the shoulder. He also told the clerk he had a gun, police say.

The clerk ran out of the store; the suspect smashed the register and got away with an unknown amount of cash.

The suspect is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, with a medium build and short hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white shirt with unknown colored stripes and white tennis shoes.
