BRADENTON -- Councilman Gene Gallo is feeling better after his accident and has returned to his Bradenton home.

While on a trip to Georgia May 26, the six-term First Ward councilman broke his femur in a lawn-mowing accident. He underwent successful hip surgery in Georgia a day later.

"I have a little discomfort, but no pain," Gallo said. "I'm really fortunate."

Gallo said his family and friends brainstormed on how to get him back to Bradenton so they could see him and care for him. His condition made it too uncomfortable for Gallo to fly or ride in a car back to Bradenton, so two of his friends borrowed an ambulance from a private company and delivered Gallo back to his family.

"It was my first time driving backward from Georgia to Florida," joked Gallo, a 50-year Bradenton resident.

Mayor Wayne Poston said he's happy to know his colleague is doing better and is back home.

"We don't know for sure when he'll be back," said Poston. "I know he is doing well."

It may take a few more weeks for him to return to work, Gallo said. He also said he will avoid landscaping even when fully recovered.

"I'm ready to go back to work at City Hall," he said. "I won't be mowing any lawns. I will be turning that duty over to my grandson."
