Bradenton Marauders | Kingham pitches into 8th inning but loses 1-0 decision to Cubs

June 5, 2013

The Bradenton Marauders (23-35) fell 1-0 against the Daytona Cubs (29-27) on Tuesday night at McKechnie Field. The Marauders have lost 1-0 three times this season. Nick Kingham (L, 6-3) became the first Marauders starter to pitch into the eighth inning this season. Kingham pitched 7 2/3 innings, surrendering one run on four hits and striking out three. Opportunities to score were seldom for both sides. Daytona plated the lone run in the sixth inning. After a walk, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases, Jorge Soler batted with one out and the bases loaded. Soler lifted a fly ball to right field, barely deep enough to score Yaniel Cabezas from third. The Marauders only had a runner reach third in two innings. Gregory Polanco singled to lead off the fourth against Ben Wells (W, 4-4). One out later, Jose Osuna doubled and Polanco stopped at third. Polanco was thrown out trying to score on Willy Garcia’s chopper to third. In the eighth Polanco was up with two outs and two runners on, but Frank Del Valle picked Taylor Lewis off second to end the threat. Del Valle pitched around a pair of two-out hits in the ninth to strand a pair in scoring position and earn a 12-out save. Game three of the series is Wednesday at 6:30p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Eliecer Navarro will pitch for Bradenton.

Also Tuesday, three Bradenton Marauders were named to the Florida State League All-Star team.

Shortstop Alen Hanson, outfielder Gregory Polanco, and starting pitcher Nick Kingham will represent Bradenton and the FSL South at the 52nd Annual FSL All-Star Game on Saturday, June 15 at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. Hanson is being honored as a mid-season All Star for the second time in his career. Hanson was an All-Star in the South Atlantic League last season. Hanson has added 11 steals to the Marauders league-best 86 stolen bases. The FSL recognized Hanson as the Player of the Week for the period May 20-May 26. Like Hanson, Polanco is making his second straight appearance on a midseason All-Star roster. Polanco leads the Marauders in batting average (.321), home runs (6), RBI (30), and stolen bases (23). He is second in the league in stolen bases. Kingham is being honored as an All-Star for the first time in his professional career. The right-hander leads the league in strikeouts with 68. Hanson is 20-years-old and in his third professional season. Polanco is 21-years-old and in his fourth professional season. Kingham is 21-years-old and in his fourth professional season.
