High Road Ale comes to Bradenton

May 30, 2013

The beer was inspired by the music of a Bradenton band, but it was brewed in Tampa and was introduced at an event on St. Pete Beach.

Now, at last, Bradenton music lovers and beer connoisseurs can get a taste of High Road Ale right here at home.

High Road Ale is brewed in Tampa by a company called Cigar City Brewing, in a partnership with another Tampa company, Rock Brothers Brewing. They created the beer in honor of Have Gun, Will Travel, a nationally known Americana band that's based in Bradenton.

The band and the brewers unveiled the beer to the public at a St. Pete Beach show in April. Now they'll bring it home to Bradenton, with a tasting and an acoustic show by the band today at the Lost Kangaroo Pub.

Rock Brothers Brewing had been looking to create a beer inspired by an area band, and people at Cigar City Brewing suggested Have Gun, Will Travel. Cigar City brewmaster Kevin Lilly created the beer after listening to their music and learning about the band. Although there's no actual citrus in the beer, Lilly said, it has slight notes of orange and grapefruit to summon images of the band's hometown, and its rehearsal space across the street from the Tropicana plant.

The name comes from "High Road," a song from Have Gun, Will Travel's upcoming album, "Fiction, Fact or Folk Tale."

Details: Tasting at 9 p.m., music at 10 p.m., Lost Kangaroo Pub, 406 Old Main St., Bradenton. Admission: Free. Information: 941-747-8114 or www.lostkangaroopub.com.
