Graduation at a glance

May 25, 2013

New College of Florida

Number of Graduates: 197

Speakers: The Honorable Charles E. Williams of the 12th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida; Reflections of a Graduating Senior from Brie McLemore.

Shining Moment: David Turon and Cassandra Wood, both of Bradenton, graduated Friday. Turon is a 2008 Manatee High graduate who achieved a double major at New College, philosophy and psychology. He is hoping to attend graduate school. Wood, who graduated from Southeast High in 2008, is striving toward environmental science and completed her recent thesis on how sea grasses fared during a recent New College seawall restoration.

Best quote: "There was no better choice for me than New College. The classes are small. It's close knit. You can get to know everyone. It feels like home. As far as colleges go, it's a deal. No, it's a steal."

-- 2013 Graduate Sarah McKnight of Tampa.

Interesting sight: Zoe Cunningham of Tallahassee wearing an old New College flag she got from a groundskeeper as her graduating gown, Cunningham, a Humanities major, now teaches dance to children in Sarasota. Of her New College experience she said: "Mind expanding. Transformative."
