LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Safrema Energy LLC was named a Winner of the 2013 TiE50 "Top Startup" competition at the recent TiEcon 2013, the world's largest conference of entrepreneurs, in Santa Clara, Calif.

The program screened 1,142 companies from 24 countries to select the 50 best-of-breed companies.

Founded in 2010 in Lakewood Ranch, the company developed the Nexus water turbine, a highly efficient, augmented-flow turbine system that produces electricity from flowing water. The company has conducted research and development with international partners in the United States, Italy, Monaco, Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Safrema Energy plans to test its first ocean platform in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Florida in cooperation with Florida Atlantic University. The goal is to produce electricity from ocean currents and rivers with its platform, designed to be the cleanest, least expensive energy-producing tool in the world.

Army recognizes Sarasota woman's military support

SARASOTA -- The U.S. Army bestowed Kathleen Gagg with the "Outstanding Civilian Service Award," in recognition of her service in support of the military.

The award is the third-highest public service honor the U.S. Army can bestow upon a civilian. A special "Twilight Tattoo -- Salute from the Chief" military pageant, featuring a U.S. Army Band commemorated this week's occasion adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery. Gen. Ray Odierno, the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, presented the honor to Gagg.

Gagg is recognized as a multimillion-dollar producer in real estate but her true passion lies in helping serve military members and their families. She was honored for her outstanding service to the United States Army, veterans, and the families of service members.

Gagg is the co-founder of Camp Better America, a non-profit that helps military families reconnect after the service member returns from war.

She and her husband, Mike, have three children, Brianne, 17, Bryan, 12, and Brooke, 10, and reside in Sarasota.
