MANATEE -- A motorcyclist was seriously injured Thursday after being hit by a car whose driver fled the scene, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle, driven by a 55-year-old man from Binghamton, N.Y., was southbound in the center lane of U.S. Highway 41, approaching Bayshore Gardens Parkway shortly before 9 a.m. An unknown vehicle in the right lane failed to observe the motorcycle and attempted to change lanes, an FHP news release said.

The left side of the vehicle, a red or purple compact car, hit the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle was ejected. The unknown vehicle, with windshield or driver's side window damage, fled the scene.

The motorcyclist was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital in serious condition, the Highway Patrol said.
