BRADENTON -- A 41-year-old Bradenton man charged with stabbing his wife to death was denied bond Wednesday by a Manatee County judge.

Sean Mudgett went before Judge Robert Farrance in his first court appearance after being jailed Tuesday on a charge of murder without premeditation in the death of his wife, Karen Mudgett.

Karen Mudgett, 31, was stabbed multiple times in the upper torso in her home May 15. She died shortly afterward at a regional hospital.

"For this afternoon's purposes, I want you to be aware that at this time I am going forward with no bond," Farrance said. "You will have the opportunity to go back and forth with the judge presiding over this matter."

Mudgett's public defender, Maria Chuquizuta, had already cautioned her client about talking to too many people.

"Please do not think you have any friends in jail, because you do not," Chuquizuta said. "That includes visitation, if any family member, anybody, comes to visit you please do not talk because everything you are saying is being recorded, as well as the calls out from the jail."

Sean Mudgett said he understood.

The only charge listed in court Wednesday was murder, however, a copy of the May incident report listed a second charge.

According to the report, Mudgett was also initially charged with assault on an officer, firefighter or emergency medical technician. The 26-year-old victim of the assault reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Mudgett was released from Blake Medical Center Tuesday after being treated for what police are calling self-inflicted stab wounds.

"He was cleared from the hospital, however, he is still going to

need medical attention at the jail," Bradenton Lt. William Fowler said Tuesday.

The attack occurred in the home the Mudgetts shared with his mother on the 2000 block of St. George Drive East. Police responded to the 911 call to the home at 10:22 p.m.

"The 911 caller advised that Mr. Sean Mudgett was stabbing his wife, Mrs. Karen Mudgett, with a knife," police reported.

Once on scene, police reportedly heard screaming and entered the home where they found Karen Mudgett still breathing and Sean Mudgett stabbing himself.

Both were taken to regional hospitals where Karen Mudgett was declared dead at 11:32 p.m.

Karen Mudgett's death marks the fourth homicide of the year in Manatee County and in Bradenton. The Manatee County Homicide Investigative Unit is handling the investigation.
