BRADENTON -- Bradenton police have charged a 41-year-old man in the stabbing death of his wife May 15.

Sean Mudgett was released Tuesday from Blake Medical Center and taken to Manatee County jail on a charge of murder without premeditation in the death of his wife, Karen Mudgett.

Karen Mudgett was pronounced dead from stab wounds received in her home on the 2000 block of St. George Drive East.

Sean Mudgett was hospitalized with what police called self-inflicted stab wounds.

"He was cleared from the hospital, however he is still going to need medical attention at the jail," Bradenton Lt. William Fowler said.

Police responded to the 911 call to the home where the couple lived with his mother.

"The 911 caller advised that Mr. Sean Mudgett was stabbing his wife, Mrs. Karen Mudgett, with a knife," police reported.

Once on scene, police reportedly heard screaming and entered the home where they found Karen Mudgett with several stab wounds to her torso.

Officers reportedly found Sean Mudgett as he was stabbing himself.

Both were taken to local

hospitals where Karen Mudgett was declared dead.

Karen Mudgett's death marks the fourth homicide of the year in Manatee County and in Bradenton. The Manatee County Homicide Investigative Unit is handling the investigation.
