Lakewood Ranch wins state Academic Team Champion award in Class 6A

HERALD STAFF REPORTMay 21, 2013

Lakewood Ranch not only boasts the most successful athletic program in the area, it has the most studious athletes as well.

The Mustangs won the FHSAA's Academic Team Champion award in Class 6A for the second consecutive year, totaling 140 points to second-place Fort Myers' 118.

Lakewood Ranch finished the school year strong. The boys track and boys weightlifting teams turn in highest cumulative grade-point averages in the state. Girls track and girls tennis was second, and softball was third.

Earlier in the school year, the Lakewood Ranch football and boys basketball teams also placed first in the state academically.

It wasn't a bad year on the playing fields, either. Lakewood Ranch won a state title in boys golf and made the state final four as a team in volleyball, girls soccer and softball. The Mustangs also crowned individual state champions in swimming and track and field.

Also in the Academic Team Champion awards, Saint Stephen's placed fourth in Class 2A.
