BRADENTON -- Manatee County Area Transit will conduct its final two public meetings on the future of public transit in Manatee County on the same day.

The second open house will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the State College of Florida Student Union Building, 5840 26th St. W.

The final open house will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Palmetto Youth Center, 501 17th St. W, Palmetto.

The sessions are part of a transportation development plan MCAT officials will take to Manatee County Commission in planning the next decade of public transit.

Dickie V Gala bring in big names, shoots for $10M

SARASOTA -- The Dickie V Gala Friday at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota will feature celebrities such as include Kansas University head men's basketball coach Bill Self and former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden. Former UConn men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun will be honored at this year's event.

Other notable college basketball coaches scheduled to attend include Notre Dame's Mike Brey, Kentucky's John Calipari, North Carolina State's Mark Gottfried and Miami's Jim Larranaga.

Last year's event raised a record $2.1 million for pediatric cancer research through The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Since 2006, the Gala has raised more than $8.6 million.

Hats & Heels fundraiser will help the homeless

BRADENTON -- The Hats & Heels fundraiser benefiting Turning Points (formerly known as the Coalition on Homelessness) will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Bradenton Country Club.

There will be a Kentucky Derby-style fashion show and lunch. Derby attire with creative hats and shoes are encouraged.

Phil Galvano Golf Tourney tees off on Friday

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The 17th annual Phil Galvano Golf Tournament will open with a noon lunch and registration and a 1 p.m. shotgun start Friday at Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch.

Manatee Democrats gather Monday in Bradenton

BRADENTON -- The Democratic Party of Manatee will holds its monthly meeting with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Speaker Ray Fusco of Manatee Rural Health will take the stage at 7 p.m. at the Central Library, 1301 Barcarrata Blvd., Bradenton, to talk about the half-cent sales tax for health care on the June 18 ballot.
