SPECIAL EVENTS

Preakness Stakes Party: Tommy and Jaymie Klauber, lifelong horse enthusiasts and proprietors of the Polo Grill and Bar on Lakewood Ranch Main Street, will host a Preakness Stakes party for race fans and first time viewers, beginning at 5 p.m. May 18. Guests will enjoy $5 Black-Eyed Susan cocktails or Old Bay-flavored Bloody Marys. Complimentary servings of Maryland crab cakes, Old Bay-seasoned potato wedges and colorful coleslaw will be offered. Door prizes and vodka tastings are in the books. Party attendees will be eligible to register for upcoming interactive mixology classes to be held in June. The restaurant will also celebrate the Belmont Stakes on June 8. All parties start at 5 p.m. and races begin at 6 p.m. Reservations are not required as the parties are free and open to the public. Chef's Cooking For Kids event: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast hosts Cooking For Kids 6-9 p.m. May 18 at IMG Academy Golf Club. The "Top Chef"-like culinary extravaganza will feature 20 top local chefs who will showcase their culinary specialties as well as cocktails, music, silent auction and camaraderie benefitting a great cause, one-to-one mentoring programs for the children of Manatee County. Sponsors include Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Florida Blue, Publix Super Markets Charities, Bradenton Herald and ABC7. Tickets to the event are $60 per person or a table of eight can be purchased for $500. The IMG Academy Golf Club is at 4350 El Conquistador Parkway, Bradenton. 'Dine Out' for Manatee Players: Several local restaurants are working with the Manatee Players on a fundraising "Dine Out" day set for May 20. On that Monday night, the eateries will donate a portion of the check from diners who say they are dining to support the Manatee Players. The theater troupe's supporters just need to choose a participating restaurant, go there May 20, and let their server know that you're dining on behalf of the Manatee Players. Participating restaurants serving lunch and dinner include: Alvarez Mexican Restaurant in Palmetto; all locations of Anna Maria Oyster Bar; Halfway at Anna Maria Oyster Bar; Atlanta Bread in Bradenton; Hooters of Bradenton; Tarpon Pointe Grill in Bradenton and YachtSea Grill. For dinner only dine at Fav's Italian Cucina in downtown Bradenton from 5 to 8 p.m.; Michael John's Restaurant on S.R. 64 near Carlton Arms; Papa Giorgio's in Sarasota from 4 to 9 p.m.; and Pier 22 in downtown Bradenton.

Pier 22 Summer Luau and Pig Roast: Pier 22 Restaurant, Patio, Ballroom & Catering, 1200 First Ave. W., Bradenton, will hold a summer luau and pig roast from 5 to 10 p.m. May 26. The event features live tropical music, a limbo contest, fire dancers and a pig roast. The menu includes oysters on the half shell, Pier 22 house salad, pineapple glazed chicken, saffron rice pilaf, sweet potato casserole, fresh garden vegetables, and Hawaiian bread with honey whipped butter, chocolate dipped pound cake and fresh fruit. Guests receive a complimentary welcome drink and lei upon arrival. The cost is $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for children younger than 12. Tax, gratuity and beverages not included. Seating is limited. Fleming's Small Plates, Big Pours: The Small Plates, Big Pours special returns to Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, 2001 Siesta Drive, Sarasota, through June 30. Guests can match any of their seven Small Plates with an oversized wine pour for $24.95. Café L'Europe dining series: Café L'Europe, one of the communities longstanding restaurants will take guests on a five-month long trip through Europe, without leaving Sarasota. Beginning this month and running through September, Café L'Europe's Passport Series -- Tour de L'Europe -- will offer diners a bon vivant vacation to five different countries featuring a savory three-course, prix-fixe dinner. Cost for this culinary journey is $35 per person. The passport series is available daily. Itinerary: May -- Hungary, June -- Italy, July -- France, August -- Greece and September -- Germany.
