Hurricane workshop set for May 23
LAKEWOOD RANCH -- A hurricane workshop willbe held at 7 p.m. May 23 at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall.
Citizens will hear from Steve Simpson, emergency operations manager with the Manatee County Department of Emergency Management, and the Lakewood Ranch Community Emergency Response Team.
Speakers will share lessons learned from hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, explain the storm surge and flood zone maps for Manatee County, and discuss emergency evacuation routes.
Residents will also learn how the county shelter system operates, the location of pet-friendly shelters, and arrangements for the elderly and special needs populations.
Additional information will be provided about storm supplies to have on hand and how to provide for needs during a post-storm recovery period. Information: 941-749-3507.
Bradenton Toastmasters to host open house
BRADENTON -- The Bradenton Toastmasters will host an open house at 6:15 p.m. May 15 at the Manatee Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 322 15th St. W., Bradenton.
There will be free food and all are welcome. Club members will be giving sample speeches at the event.
Bradenton Toastmasters is a nonprofit organization that encourages individuals to become better speakers.
They help people become more comfortable in con-versations, develop their leadership potential, and improve their presentation skills.
Meetings are held in a supportive atmosphere that allows individuals to improve at their own pace.
