Palmetto man charged with aggravated assault

May 10, 2013

— A 19-year-old Palmetto man was arrested shortly after 6 p.m. Friday and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office alleges Jordan Hird, 19, who lives in the 1200 block of Eighth Street West, Palmetto, threatened to shoot an off-duty reserve deputy during a traffic stop on the car he was driving.

Hird reportedly pointed what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun at the officer.

The incident began when the officer was driving west on State Road 64 from the Country Creek subdivision and noticed Hird allegedly driving improperly.

The officer stopped Hird in the Publix Supermarket shopping center at SR 64 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and approached the car Hird was driving, later determined to be his girlfriend’s.

The report states that when Hird pointed the weapon, the officer backed away and Hird fled.

The officer traced the car to the girlfriend and after calling her, convinced her to have Hird contact authorities, according to the report.

Hird showed up at the Palmetto Police Department and was arrested, but the firearm was not located, the report states.
