Bradenton church thrift store robbed of $50

BRADENTON -- Trinity United Methodist Church Thrift Store clerk Pat Youmans was alone in the front of the store on Manatee Avenue West at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday when an elderly man came to the counter and said: "I'm not going to hurt you."

"I said to myself, 'Uh oh,'" Youmans said later.

The man then said: "I will tell you this one time. I want $50."

Said Youmans; "Will you take $20?"

"No, I want $50," the robber said.

Youmans went to the cash register at the store at 3306 Manatee Ave. W. and gave two 20-dollar bills and a 10-dollar bill to the man, who then fled on foot.

A Bradenton Police Department detective said the robber had not been located as of 3 p.m.

Youmans said the robber had only four lower teeth and was about 60.

"I tried to bargain with him," said Youmans, who said she was shaken by the event. "He had been in the store earlier and came back. I felt very alone at that moment. I think if someone had walked in at that time, he would have walked out. I kept praying, 'Someone please walk in' but no one did."

Buzz Sweeney, president of the Trinity Thrift Store, said Youmans handled the situation well although bargaining with a robber is a bit unusual.

"She was an ace," said Sweeney, who indicated the church will look at new security measures.

Another Trinity Thrift employee, Nell Caison, was in the back of the store at the time of the robbery and missed it all.

The store was robbed four or five years ago in the same type of incident, Caison said.
