State track and field | Manatee's Derrick Calloway repeats as state shot put champ

HERALD STAFF REPORTMay 4, 2013

— Manatee shot putter Derrick Calloway repeated as Class 4A state champion in the shot put Saturday afternoon with an effort of 58 feet, 5 inches, more than a foot clear of runner-up Kevin Delgado of Miami Coral Park.

Calloway, a Division I football recruit who took up track and field last year for fun, improved his state meet result by more than 4 feet. Delgado finished second in 2012 as well.

Meanwhile, Manatee sprinter Brandon Carnes picked up a trio of third-place finishes on a gray, wet day at the University of North Florida.

Carnes finished third in the 100-meter dash in 10.82, one-hundredth of a second behind winner Amir Rasul of Miami Columbus. In the 200 dash, Carnes was third at 21.62 seconds.

Carnes anchored Manatee's 400 relay team, which also included Daren Ardis, Ja Juan Pollock and Daren Muller. The Hurricanes placed third in 42.37 seconds.
