Manatee man charged with battery on officer

— A suspected prowler faces additional charges after deputies say he resisted arrest, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office reported.

According to a news release, units responded to a report of a prowler in the back yard of a home in the 1500 block of 58th Avenue Drive West at about 12:20 a.m. Saturday. The resident of the house told deputies she thought the suspect was someone she knew.

Deputies then spotted the man, identified as Jay Rhoades, 38, who immediately began to flee, the release said.

Deputies caught up to Rhoades, who began to kick and spit at them. No one was injured. Rhoades was taken into custody and taken directly to the jail, charged with battery on a law enforcement officer as well as several outstanding warrants, the release said.
