State College of Florida softball team drops state tourney opener 12-2

May 3, 2013

— The State College of Florida Manatees are heading to the loser's bracket at the FCSAA Gulf District tournament at Pensacola's Exchange Softball Park.

Chipola, the No. 4 ranked team in the season-ending state coaches poll, reeled off a 12-2 victory cut short by the 10-run rule in the sixth inning.

The Manatees face the loser of Hillsborough Community College and Pensacola State College at 6 p.m.

State College of Florida's softball season has seen its ups-and-downs since Manatees ace pitcher Paige Mathews was lost for the season with a broken right wrist.

Mathews was a first-team junior college All-American as a freshman last season.

Undeterred, the Manatees are back at the Florida College System Activities Association state tournament in Pensacola.

SCF (34-19) entered the tournament on a two-game winning streak after sweeping Miami-Dade in the regular-season finale.
