Golf Plus | Jaclyn Sweeney remains second on Symetra Tour money list

May 2, 2013

• Bradenton resident Jaclyn Sweeney held on to second place on the LPGA Symetra Tour's Volvik Race for the Card standings. She has $17,990 in earnings this season.

The former IMG Academy standout is roughly $800 ahead of third place Christine Song, who captured last week's Guardian Retirement Championship at Sara Bay Country Club. The top 10 players on the money list at the end of the year receive LPGA Tour cards.

• Manatee County resident Phil Walters is looking strong in his quest to win the Sarasota City Men's Amateur at Bobby Jones Golf Club's British Course over two weekends.

The 72-hole tournament is at the halfway point, and Walters has built himself a six-shot lead just a week after he partnered with Tim Judy to win back-to-back Bradenton City Two-Man Combo titles at River Run Golf Links.

Walters posted rounds of 66 and 67 for a 13-under-par 133 totalo. The tournament resumes Saturday.

• Braden River alum Kristin Swindell snagged fourth place overall in the Atlantic Sun tournament held in mid-April at Jeykll Island Country Club in Georgia as a member of the Florida Gulf Coast University golf team. The FGCU squad took third place on the strength of Swindell's performance, an even-par 216.

• Sara Bay will host the United States Open's local qualifier on May 6. Local qualifiers advance to the sectional round before earning a precious spot into this year's U.S. Open held in June. The lone Florida sectional is in Manatee County at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club.

• Bradenton juniors performed well in the recent Hurricane Golf Tour event held at the IMG Academies Golf and Country Club.

In the boys 15-18 age division, Newport Laparojkit (first place), Juan Veloza (second), Shuhei Takahashi (tied for third), Claudio Correa (tied for third) and Rodrigo Munoz (tied for third) snagged top finishes.

In the girls 15-18s, Kanyanat Saithip won, while Manatee High's Gianna Tomeo (second), Alex Wright (tied for third) and Christina Wang (tied for third) also tallied good results.

Tomeo's younger sister, Gabrielle, tied for second with Wendy Tan in the girls 11-14s. And in the boys 11-14s, TC Carlson (second) and Jason Jin (third) finished strong.
