Sarasota cyclist hurt in car collision

SARASOTA — A 24-year-old Englewood man sustained a serious head injury when his motorized Schwinn bicycle was hit by a Toyota Camry. The incident occurred at 7:17 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Gladstone Boulevard and Rockwood Way in Sarasota County, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. An 88-year-old Englewood man was driving the 2004 Camry south on Gladstone Boulevard approaching Rockwood Way while the gas-engine bicycle was traveling north on the right edge of the pavement of Gladstone Boulevard, according to the report. The Camry driver reportedly attempted to make a left turn onto eastbound Rockwood Way and the front of the Camry struck the front of the bicycle. The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, hit the pavement and taken to Blake Medical Center. The Camry driver allegedly failed to yield the right of way to the bicyclist and charges are pending, according to FHP.
