Sarasota deputies: Man broke into boss's business, beat his dog to death

April 29, 2013

SARASOTA -- Manatee deputies arrested a man charged with breaking into his employer's business in Sarasota and beating his boss's dog to death with a tire iron, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

On Sunday morning, the owner at John's Automotive on Snug Harbor Place in Sarasota reported that his 4-year-old mastiff was missing.

"Later that day he reviewed video surveillance and saw horrific images of a man beating his dog to death," the Sarasota sheriff's office said in a news release.

When deputies returned, the man identified the suspect as Kevin Koscielniak, 52, an employee who was asked to leave Saturday after causing a disturbance, the report said.

"The investigation determined that Koscielniak climbed over a barbed wire fence, killed the dog with a tire iron, wrapped the dog in a blanket, cut the fence to Casey’s Auto, an adjacent business, dragged the dog onto that property and buried it there," the report states.

Manatee deputies located Koscielniak and he was arrested Sunday.

He is charged with one count of cruelty to animals resulting in death, one count of improper disposal of dead animals, two counts of burglary, one count of tampering with evidence and one count of criminal mischief. He was being held at the Sarasota County jail on bonds totaling $46,000.
