SPECIAL EVENTS

Wine and song event: Marking the 20th anniversary season of Manatee County's premiere orchestra and chorus, Anna Maria Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra is presenting a "taste-full" program of specially selected Wine & Song pairings with two seatings at 4 and 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Longboat Key Education Center, 5370 Gulf of Mexico Dr., Longboat Key. Join us as we tour the "Old World" through music presented by AMICCO songstress Joy Leitner and PRP Wines expert Carol Prokap. Tickets are $25, which includes a taste of eight to 10 exclusive wines, light appetizers and concert. Sixth annual Kentucky Derby Party: Tommy and Jaymie Klauber, lifelong horse enthusiasts and proprietors of the Polo Grill and Bar on Lakewood Ranch Main Street, will once again host an "Ultimate Derby Party" for race fans and first time viewers, beginning at 5 p.m. May 4. Attendees will receive complimentary servings of traditional derby fare, including baby hot browns, hand biscuits, Kentucky Burgoo and grit cakes. Mint Juleps and Early Times bourbon cocktails will be offered for $5. A best hat contest will be held with a variety of prizes. Derby parties are free and open to the public. The restaurant will also celebrate the Preakness Stakes on May 18 and the Belmont Stakes on June 8. All parties start at 5 p.m. and races begin at 6 p.m. Reservations are not required as the parties are open to the public. Casual attire is accepted, derby hats and bow ties are encouraged. Chef's Cooking For Kids event: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast hosts Cooking For Kids 6-9 p.m. May 18 at IMG Academy Golf Club. The "Top Chef"-like culinary extravaganza will feature 20 top local chefs who will showcase their culinary specialties as well as cocktails, music, silent auction and camaraderie benefitting a great cause, one-to-one mentoring programs for the children of Manatee County. Sponsors include Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Florida Blue, Publix Super Markets Charities, Bradenton Herald and ABC7. Tickets to the event are $60 per person or a table of eight can be purchased for $500. The IMG Academy Golf Club is at 4350 El Conquistador Parkway, Bradenton. Pier 22 Summer Luau and Pig Roast: Pier 22 Restaurant, Patio, Ballroom & Catering, 1200 First Ave. W., Bradenton, will hold a summer luau and pig roast from 5 to 10 p.m. May 26. The event features live tropical music, a limbo contest, fire dancers and a pig roast. The menu includes oysters on the half shell, Pier 22 house salad, pineapple glazed chicken, saffron rice pilaf, sweet potato casserole, fresh garden vegetables, and Hawaiian bread with honey whipped butter, chocolate dipped pound cake and fresh fruit. Guests receive a complimentary welcome drink and lei upon arrival. The cost is $24.95 for adults and $14.95 for children younger than 12. Tax, gratuity and beverages not included. Seating is limited. Cinco de Mayo: Mattison's City Grille, 1 N. Lemon Ave., Sarasota, is offering Mexican specials to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 5. The menu includes chicken tortilla soup, tortilla-encrusted tilapia with jalapeño tartar sauce on focaccia bread; pizza de carne with smoked chipotle chicken with onions, peppers, jack cheese and mozzarella; pizza vegeteriana with spinach, green tomatoes, roasted yellow peppers, queso fresco, guajillo sauce; evening appetizer specials are red snapper ceviche with avocado and lime; evening entrée special chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and pepper jack cheese served with refried beans and Spanish rice; grilled ranchero steak 12-ounce rib-eye with a light mole sauce, a sunny side-up egg and chorizo home fries served with a side salad; the dessert special is a house made tres leche cake. MOTHER'S DAY

Mattison's Mother's Day specials: Mattison's City Grille, 1 N. Lemon Ave., Sarasota, is offering a Mother's Day à la carte Sunday Brunch Menu 11 a.m.-2 p.m. May 12 featuring a smoked salmon omelette with green onions and cream cheese served with home fries and toast; Quiche de la Mère with zucchini, mushrooms, and goat cheese served with fresh fruit; the lunch menu is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features Tuscan Minestrone Soup; Mama Mia Pizza with blackened shrimp, salsa, basil, and a sun-dried tomato spread topped with mozzarella; veggie pizza with ratatouille, ricotta cheese, tomatoes and mozzarella. Evening specials include, as an appetizer, lobster cakes with avocado relish and habanero rémoulade; entrees include spinach and crab meat stuffed salmon with pesto risotto and a charred tomato beurre blanc; filet mignon with Gorgonzola crust and crispy lardons served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and Bordelaise sauce. For dessert, the warm pear tartin with vanilla ice cream and port syrup is featured. All Mother's Day specials are served from 4 to 10 p.m. Mom receives a complimentary glass of Champagne with her entrée. ON THE MENU

Journey to Morocco: Michael's On East, 1212 East Ave., Sarasota, will offer a three-course Moroccan Epicurean Adventure dinner menu is available Monday through Saturday evenings for $29.95 per person through April. The two-course Power Lunch offering features a choice of entrée and dessert for only $18.95 per person and is available 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Guests are invited to add a red or white wine pairing from one of South Africa's oldest wineries, Rustenberg, which was established in 1682. COOKING CLASSES

Elegant Plates cooking class: Chef Greg presents a new class at 6 p.m. April 25 at Pier 22, 1200 First Ave. W., Bradenton. When cooking is not enough and you want to really impress your family, friends or that lucky someone Chef Greg will show you a few of the tastiest "design" secrets in food preparation. The class includes a five-course small plate menu incorporating all the recipes: beef scaloppini, roasted poblano peppers, deconstructed Caesar salad, crab stuffed prawns, blackberry pork tournedos and peanut buttered french toast.
