ELLENTON -- An Ellenton man shot and killed a pit bull Saturday when it charged toward him and his wife in front of their home, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.

According to a news release, the man observed the dog running loose inside his back yard in the 700 block of Ixora Road at about 2:40 p.m.

The man and his wife left the house by the front door, when a neighbor called to them. As the couple were walking in the road toward the neighbor, the dog exited the open gate from the back yard and aggressively charged them, deputies say.

The man, who has a concealed carry permit, drew his pistol and shot the dog in the head, the news release said. The dog initially dropped, but then lunged at the couple a second time. The victim shot the dog in the head again.

When deputies arrived, statements from two neighbors corroborated the couple's story, the news release said.

The dog's owner, Kimberly Rodgers, was contacted and notified of the shooting. The victims were uninjured.
