Haile Middle School hosting open house

Haile Middle School hosts open house

MANATEE -- All parents considering sending students to Haile Middle School are invited to an open house. The sixth-grade open house and new student orientation is from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. May 1 in the gymnasium.

Two SCF students earn Coca-Cola scholarships

MANATEE -- State College of Florida students Christine Gambino and Madeline Heath were named 2013 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholars April 9. Each received $1,250 scholarships and special medallions.

Only two students from each college can be nominated for the award. Recipients are selected by a panel of judges who consider academic rigor, grade-point average, academic and leadership awards and engagement in college and community service projects.

Gambino, Heath and Lidia O'Shields were named to the 2013 All-Florida Academic Team, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service to the community

The All-Florida Academic Team is composed of students nominated by their respective colleges to the competition sponsored by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Gambino is president of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliate Club. Heath is secretary of the Nu Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and has participated in the symphony orchestra. O'Shields was on the Student Activity Budget Review Committee and a member of the History/Political Science Club.

Hall of Famer coming to Manatee School for Arts

MANATEE -- Jeff Cook, Country Music Hall of Famer and founder of the group Alabama, will perform at the third annual Del Couch Music Education Fundraiser at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Manatee School for the Arts, 700 Haben Blvd,, Palmetto.

Proceeds will pay for a computer lab and software programs to teach music editing, recording and production.

Jeff Cook & The Allstar Goodtime Band, and Rick Derringer will perform with 11-year-old Jake Castro, who recently played at the 78th Annual Florida Strawberry Festival.

Students Colton Cason, Trevor Bystrom, Sam Woolf, Michael Galvano, Taylor Zebracki, Matt Walden, Haydon Richau and bands Northwest and Cordova will also perform.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or through couchmusiceducationfoundation.org.
