Palmetto plates 7 late, beats Booker

The Palmetto baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away from host Booker 12-6 on Friday afternoon.

Brett Vedder led the Tigers' offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs. Tyler Bench, Tyler Mitchell and Jared Taylor had two hits apiece. Taylor knocked in two runs.

Hunter Leonard pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief to pick up the victory.

Palmetto is 10-12.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 15, IMAGINE SCHOOL OF NORTH PORT 5 (5) -- Derek Ziebell picked up his first varsity victory, and six different Falcons collected two hits as visiting Saint Stephen's run-ruled the Sharks.

Ziebell pitched four innings, allowing four unearned runs, three hits and five walks while striking out five.

Colin Yates, Jake Westberry, Sam O'Dell, Parker Shanahan, Zack Kanter and Justin Gregorius had two hits apiece for the Falcons (8-11). Westberry hit a three-run double, and O'Dell knocked in two.

Juco baseball

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 4, ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE 2 -- Sean Trent's two-run triple keyed a four-run sixth inning as the Manatees got past the Spartans at Robert C. Wynn Field.

Ben Ancheff went six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, and six hits while striking out four to get the win.

Connor Hale had two hits, and Jared Smith scored a run and knocked in one for SCF (34-9, 16-3 Suncoast Conference).

Prep softball

PALMETTO 8, ARCADIA DESOTO 3 -- Keeley Ecker went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Breana Fox got the win on the mound as the host Tigers finished off the regular season at 13-8.

Auria Mounts, Sabria Bruton and Sarrah Diaz each collected two hits for Palmetto.

n JV: Alane Murrell, Jazmin Reyes, Jordan Hammond and Samantha Lee each had two hits as the Palmetto junior varsity earned a 17-9 victory over visiting DeSoto.

Brooke Taylor earned the win for the Tigers (8-10-2).

Youth tennis

LONGINES FUTURE TENNIS ACES -- Bradenton 11-year-old Adam Neff won the fourth annual tournament at Delray Beach, defeating top-seeded Brandon Nakashima of San Diego 6-1, 6-4. Neff will represent the United States when he competes against finalists from 15 countries at a global event in Paris.

Boys lacrosse

SAINT STEPHEN'S 18, TAMPA PREP 4 -- The Falcons finished the regular season at 8-4 behind four goals apiece from Luc Goeders and Ali Sammour on Thursday.

Goeders also had six assists. Trace Cook made eight saves.

Three seniors -- Charlie Boothby, Tim Nutter and Mike Berdusco -- had a goal apiece in their final match.
