Queen tribute comes to Sarasota

March 28, 2013

You'll never see the original Queen lineup again, obviously, but a guy named Gary Mullen and his band the Works are the next best thing.

Or at least an awful lot of people seem to think so. Mullen's two-hour tribute show, "One Night With Queen," has been popular all over the world for the past 10 years.

It's coming to Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall this evening.

The story goes that Mullen has been a huge Queen fan all his life, and was already performing a Freddie Mercury tribute act around England when, without his knowledge, his mother and his sister entered him in a prestigious national TV talent show.

He won the contest, and that kicked his career into a much higher gear. Gary Mullen & the Works have been playing something like 150 gigs a year ever since. They're now two weeks into an American tour.

Youtube videos of the show indicate that Mullen looks a little like Mercury, sounds a lot like him, and has his stage moves down perfectly.

Details: 8 p.m. March 28, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, Tickets: $45-$50. Information: www.vanwezel.org, 941-953-3368.
