Chickens in your back yard? Manatee commissioners want a plan

March 26, 2013

— The Manatee County Commission is asking its staff to draw up a plan that would allow residents to keep backyard chickens legally.

The matter will come to a vote at a later date.

The commission heard a variety of speakers pro- and con- about the issue during its regular meeting Tuesday.

Proponents argue that they could keep a few chickens in backyard coops without disturbing neighbors, while opponents say such activities should not be allowed in residential neighborhoods.

Keeping backyard chickens is currently prohibited, county officials said.
