Golf Plus | Jaclyn Sweeney goes for Symetra Tour repeat

March 21, 2013

NOTEWORTHY

n Bradenton's Jaclyn Sweeney will go for her second consecutive LPGA Symetra Tour victory when the circuit hits the Sunshine State for the Florida's Natural Charity Classic in Winter Haven this week.

Sweeney won the season-opening VisitMesa.com Gateway Classic in Arizona last month to take an early lead in pursuit of a 2014 LPGA Tour card.

The Andover, Mass., native and former IMG Academy and Arizona State standout begins her quest for two straight titles at 8:40 a.m. Friday off the 10th tee in the first round.

Other local players in the field include IMG alum Natalie Sheary, IMG alum Seema Sadekar, Bradenton's Rachel Connor and Bradenton's Ginger Howard.

n Saint Stephen's senior Yvonne Zheng, who is heading to UCLA, earned the LPGA Symetra Tour exemption into next month's Guardian Retirement Championship to be held at Sara Bay Country Club in Manatee County through her performance on the IMG Junior Golf Tour.

Zheng remained the points leader after the final qualifying event last weekend at Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland.

She posted a 4-over-par 148 total for the two-day, 36-hole tournament to snag a tie for second place. That gave her just enough points to edge Ailin Li for the exemption.

Li earned a three-shot victory in Deland, but it wasn't enough to overtake Zheng, who was edged for the qualifying berth last year by Bolivia's Natalia Perez in the final event.

n The 16th annual City of Bradenton Men's Senior Amateur Championship is this weekend at River Run Golf Links in Bradenton. The tournament begins at 7 a.m. with tee times running off the front and back nines each day.

Lawrence Elliot is the defending champion. Last year, he shot a 72-69--141. That was good for a three-shot victory over Ray Wenck, who won the event in 2009 and 2010.
